The Application Builder Challenge will include three teams that will compete to build the best Web services application in under 48 hours. The teams will be using WebGain's Application Composer(TM) 2.0 and MacroMedia(R) Dreamweaver(R) UltraDev(TM).

The three teams include developers from Beans Factory, CSG Professional Consulting and OkieWorld Corporation. A panel of senior InfoWorld editors will judge the teams' applications by the following criteria:

• Ease of Use
• Demonstration of business process and/or transaction that reaches closure
• Successful integration between business boundaries
• Feature rich application

SANTA CLARA -- WebGain, Inc., a leading provider of integrated software to accelerate e-business development environments, today announced that "The Beans Factory" was the winner of the Application Builder Challenge at the InfoWorld Next-Generation Web Services Conference. The contest was designed to illustrate the ease of creating and deploying Enterprise applications based on Web Services. Three teams competed against each other to create the best Enterprise-class Web Service application in less than 10 hours during the event on January 16 & 17, 2002 in San Francisco.

The winning application, judged by Senior InfoWorld Editors, was awarded to Johannes Kuah of Beans Factory for the development of an auction site and B-to-C shopping site using WebGain Application Composer(TM) 2.0. Application Composer enabled the developers to rapidly assemble Web Services and reusable Java(TM) components into enterprise e-business applications. "Among the WebGain products, Application Composer has been underestimated; it's one of a kind," said Johannes Kuah.

"It was a difficult decision. All applications displayed breadth and depth of Web Services used and completeness of functionality," stated Chad Dickerson, InfoWorld CTO.
"The most impressive thing was how quickly all these applications were built," said Michael Vizard, Editor in Chief, InfoWorld Media Group. "It's one more proof point that the concept of Web Services is going to have a substantial impact on application development."
